History of Epsilon Eta Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.
1954-Present
Epsilon Eta Zeta Chapter was chartered in 1954. Its beginning is accredited to Brother S. P. Charleston. In keeping with the national history, Brother Charleston felt that a sister organization was needed. Therefore, he sought to locate Pearls locally. The five Sorors were: Erma Abercrombie, Ruth Barnett, Gwendolyn Earl, Elizabeth Leonard and Pongee Threatt. His inspiration and support lead these ladies to chartering this chapter over fifty-five years ago. Soror Elizabeth Leonard continues to be in the hearts of our local chapter while the other four founders are honored posthumously.
During the first fifty-five years this chapter made outstanding history. This local chapter produced the 19th International Grand Basileus, a State Director, as well as State, Regional, and National officers. This local chapter also bought and paid for the current Greek house and had a fantastic mortgage burning ceremony.
To celebrate fifty-five years a gala affair was held at “The Estate located in Columbus, GA. Many friends and supporters joined to remember the rich history this sorority created through the years. Former Mayor Poydasheff presented the chapter with a proclamation proclaiming September 11th as "Epsilon Eta Zeta Chapter" Day.
The chartered members in attendance were Soror Ruth Barnett and Soror Elizabeth Leonard. They were presented with a certificate and a beautiful Zeta Doll. Also recognized were Soror Willie Pearl Farley and Soror Mary Stovall. They became a part of Zeta Phi Beta fifty years ago at joining the Pi Beta chapter at Albany State College (now Albany State University).
The Kappa Epsilon Chapter was also recognized; they were charted in 1974 on the campus of Columbus College, now Columbus State University. The charter members in attendance were: Sorors Malinda Smith Stovall, Brenda Byrd, Brenda Grimes, Juanita McBride, and Beverly Hinton Hugle.
History will continue to be made as Epsilon Eta Zeta and Kappa Epsilon chapters continue to define the sisterhood and exemplify the image of Finer Womanhood.
