AWARDED SCHOLARSHIPS
Service, Education, Progress. Epsilon Eta Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Columbus, Georgia annually awards scholarships to deserving youth in our community. To be eligible for this scholarship applicant must have a GPA of 2.75, be accepted to a college, university or technical school, complete a scholarship application and compose an essay. Our scholarship recipient for 2010-2011 is Ms. Jamika Smith, a graduate of William Henry Spencer High School. This young lady was very active in her school, church and community. Jamika is the daughter of Ms. Lisa McCullough of Columbus, Georgia. Jamika excelled academically ranking number 2 out of a class of 145 with a GPA of 4.07. During her senior year Ms. Smith served as the Battalion Intelligence and Security Officer for JROTC. She also served as squad leader for the JROTC Drill Team for three years, vice president of DECA, vice president of the National Honor Society and Senior Class Treasurer.
During her tenure at Spencer Jamika received several awards to include the following: Georgia Certificate of Merit, May 2009, Youth of the Month Award, September 2009, Citizen of the Month, Sojourners Citizenship Medal from Fort Banning Chapter #8, Daughter of American Revolution Good Citizen Award, Superior JROTC Cadet and Page One Nominee for General Scholarship to name a few.
Jamika attends Bethlehem Lutheran Church where she serves as the secretary for the youth group. Every summer she volunteers as a teacher for Vacation Bible School. In her community Jamika volunteers as a peer helper with the GREAT Summer Program and Thrivent which is a youth group that restores and polishes selected homes in low standard neighborhoods. Jamika logged a total of 102 volunteer hours at the Muscogee County Sheriff's Office during 2007 and 2008. During the summer of 2009 Ms. Smith completed an internship with the WIC Center at the Columbus Health Department which totaled about 85 hours.
Ms. Smith was accepted to five colleges but will attend Fort Valley State University. Her plans are to major in Nutritional Science and upon graduation from Fort Valley, serve as an officer in the United States Army as a Registered Dietitian. Ms. Smith's desire to become a Dietitian is personal because she has seen the impact of diabetes on family members and Americans as a whole and would like to help make a difference in this world. We wish Ms. Jamika Smith much success in her future endeavors.
G.W. CARVER HIGH GRADUATE AWARDED SCHOLARSHIP
The Sorors of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. are proud to announce Ms. Najah TeRae Petties as our second scholarship recipient for this year. During her tenure at this magnet school Najah completed many Advanced Placement and Honors classes. While maintaining a GPA of 3.0 she was also involved in many extracurricular and community service activities which included serving as President of the Student Council, Treasurer for AHS/HOSA (Allied Health Club/Health Occupation Students of America), and a competing member of the Academic Decathlon Team. Najah's community service is just as impressive as her resume. Ms. Petties volunteered numerous hours at the Azalea Trace Nursing Home participated with the Carver High Blood Drive, Walk-a-Thon for Muscular Dystrophy and planted trees in the community.
Najah was accepted to Albany State University where she plans to major in Pre-Med Biology and later on become a physician. Her passion for science and desire to help others influenced her decision to pursue this career choice. We are proud of our scholarship recipient who is the daughter of Mr. Reginald Petties and Wanda Green of Columbus, Georgia.
Zeta Phi Beta Sorority annually awards scholarships to deserving youth in our community. To be eligible for this scholarship applicant must have at least a GPA of 2.75, be accepted to a post secondary institution, complete an application and compose an essay. Soror Malinda Stovall serves as President and Soror Olivia Rutledge is the chairperson for scholarship.
